The remains of Hiram F. Cash and Vincent B. Costello were present at the funeral. Although World War I ended in 1918, the remains of soldiers killed in Europe were not returned to the US for another 3 years. Private Costello was one of the first men from the District to die in the war, and Lieutenant Cash was a Washington native who died on the Western European front. The American Legion posts in Washington, DC were named in their honor.
