Turning the Ground Near the Lincoln Memorial <p>In the 1920s, the land on the western end of the Mall was transformed from a field into the planned landscape surrounding the newly-built <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/33">Lincoln Memorial</a>, designed by architect James Greenleaf.
