Nimitz was honored with a parade in Washington, DC, before being presented with a Gold Star by President Truman for his service as the Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean areas from 1944 to 1945. Nimitz had represented the United States at the formal surrender of Japan in September 1945. Thousands of sailors, Marines, and women from <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/229">WAVES</a> units marched in his honor.
