Although this is a highly romanticized view of the city, when artist William McLeod painted this landscape in 1844, &lt;a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/402"&gt;cows still roamed the Mall and much of the land around the Capitol remained undeveloped&lt;/a&gt;.</text>
