Plan of the city of Washington in the territory of Columbia [detail] In 1791, <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/105">Andrew Ellicott</a> surveyed the future city of Washington, taking the place of <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/82">Pierre Charles L'Enfant</a>, the city's original designer.
