Henry Bacon's design for the Lincoln Memorial
Description
An account of the resource
In 1912 this design by Henry Bacon was selected as the winner of a national design competition for the Lincoln Memorial. His design was in the neoclassical style, inspired by the temples of Greece. The design also featured a 19 foot statue of Lincoln, designed by sculptor Daniel Chester French, and murals, painted by artist Jules Guerin. Construction for the monument began in 1914 and was completed in 1922.

Lincoln Memorial
Description
An account of the resource

Constructed between 1914 and 1922, the Lincoln Memorial consists of a large, columned, classically inspired structure with a statue of Lincoln in the interior. Inscribed on the interior walls are Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address. The site has become a frequent stage for the civil rights demonstrations. African American opera singer Marian Anderson performed there after being barred from performing at then segregated Constitution Hall in 1939. In 1963 Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Title
A name given to the resource
Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
Description
An account of the resource
Stretching approximately a third of a mile from end to end, the reflecting pool lies between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Built in 1920 on marshland, the pool gradually sank, leaking into the surrounding land. In 2012, the pool was reconstructed. It now holds nearly seven million gallons of water and utilizes a sustainable circulation system pulling water from the nearby Tidal Basin.
