{"exhibit":{"title":"Were there any alternate designs for the Lincoln Memorial?","description":"
In 1867, 2 years after Lincoln's assassination, the Lincoln Monument Association formed to honor him with a memorial. Financial problems and political infighting prevented the memorial from becoming a possibility at that time. Over the next 40 years, many different designs for statues and elaborate memorials were proposed. By 1911, Congress stepped in and offered funding, created a an oversight committee, chose a design, and began construction of what became the Lincoln Memorial we know today. The Memorial finally opened in 1922.<\/p>","credits":"","featured":0,"public":1,"theme":"","theme_options":null,"slug":"alternatedesignlincoln","added":"2013-11-19 09:40:34","modified":"2014-05-09 10:34:18","owner_id":6,"use_summary_page":1,"cover_image_file_id":null,"id":58},"item":{"item_type_id":6,"collection_id":null,"featured":0,"public":1,"added":"2013-11-14 09:35:30","modified":"2015-10-07 12:42:42","owner_id":6,"id":459}}
